Espressivo Konfigurator

The master module is the central control unit of the Espressivo system. It supplies power to the sensor modules, processes the data and generates the midi signals to control an electric action or other tone generators. The manuals are connected to the six connections of the manual buses on the master module via Ethernet cables.

The current version 3 of the module offers even more possibilities:
In addition to the classic MIDI jack for keyboard data output, the unit has an additional pair of MIDI input and output. Via the additional output, suitable organ controller systems can output their own data, especially stop information for a full MIDI output at the console. For a MIDI input at the console, the master module now also provides an input jack. The data received here is forwarded to the organ control system. This allows the organ control system to provide full remote control of the organ from external MIDI-devices.

It is best to place the master module close to the manuals in the console. All bus sockets are identical, no special assignment of manuals to the jacks is necessary. The cable length between master and manuals should not exceed 2m. Only use high-quality, highly flexible cables. These are available here as accessories or in the Espressivo configurator.

The master module is powered via the plug-in terminal (12-24V). Please use a separate power supply for the Espressivo system (see accessories).

The key action control signals are output via the standard midi interface (DIN socket). In addition, the data is sent in "ipMIDI" format via the Ethernet interface. This interface operates about 300 times faster than the MIDI standard. Various manufacturers of capture systems, such as Eisenschmid, Heuss, Sinua and SSOS already use this standard. Drivers for Macintosh and Windows PCs are also available, allowing direct integration of MIDI software.

The Espressivo system can be set up and adjusted conveniently with the accompanying free Windows software. Use this software to set up the manuals, calibrate key travel, adjust contact pre-travel and modify the switch point spread.

The button battery on the master module is used to power the built-in real-time clock. The battery should last considerably longer than 5 years. An empty battery does not affect the system's function, as the clock is only relevant for the logfile functions.

The Espressivo system consists of up to 8 sensor modules per manual, each with 8 keys, so that up to 64 keys can be detected. Additional modules can be mounted for even larger manual ranges. A special "piano" configuration combines two manual units into one large keyboard, as is now sometimes installed as a "master keyboard" to control electronic sound generators or keyboards in consoles.

The modules are supplied in a frame of eight. The holding bars of the frame can easily be cut with a side cutter.

To equip different manual with different numbers of keys, one or more sensor boards can be shortened at the golden marking lines on the component side. Use impact shears or a metal saw to do this. The cut edges should be as smooth as possible to prevent short-circuits on the printed circuit boards.

The modules can be mounted in different positions:

a) "normal": the key magnet approaches the sensor board when the key is pressed. Here the sensor rail mounted on the front arm under the keyboard or on the rear arm above the keyboard.

b) "inverse": the key magnet moves away from the sensor board when the key is pressed. This situation occurs when mounted under the keyboard on the rear arm of a center-pivoted keyboard or when mounted suspended above the front arm of the keyboard. The position of the sensors is always facing away from the balance beam. Therefore, with normal mounting, the board with the number 1 is located on the bass side, with inverse mounting on the treble side.

The system automatically recognises the mounting type and keyboard range during setup.

To mount the sensor modules on the aluminium rail, special screws are supplied which can be easily screwed into the profile groove at any point without any further work (such as pre-drilling or punching).

These are thread-forming screws, DIN7500, ISO 14581 M2.5x6 or M2.5x5 (e.g. Würth art. no. 0209722506). A Torx screwdriver TX8 is required for these screws.

The pluggable ribbon cable connects the manual sensors to each other within the mounting rail. The connection to the master module is made with a CAT cable.

The special aluminum rail makes the installation of the Espressivo sensors particularly convenient - both when building new keyboards and when retrofitting existing consoles. Mounting the rail at the most stable point of the keyboard is another patented feature: directly at the balance beam.

In the rail, the sensor modules can be moved along the rail and fixed at any point with thread-forming screws. In this way, the sensor positions can be easily adapted to all common key spacings.

The mounting profile has a length of 1000mm. To adapt it to the width of the manual, it should be shortened from the left and from the right so that the slotted holes for mounting are evenly distributed over the keyboard.

Only the vertical distance to the keys is adjusted mechanically during assembly via the slotted holes in the profile. The adjustment of contact pre-travel is done at any time via tablet or laptop in the complete Keyboard.

An indispensable tool for equipping a keyboard with the Espressivo system. The pin automatically attracts the keyboard magnet in the correct polarity. Then press the magnet into the mounting hole, hold it there and pull the pin off again.
